The dictionary defines the word perseverance as “steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.”  No one exemplifies this better than BACk to Work client, Jean J.

In 2004 when her managerial position at a local power company in Minnesota was eliminated, Jean rolled with the punches and found new employment in the healthcare industry.  Two years later when she landed in Brevard County, Jean continued her career in the healthcare industry and got a job with a large corporate healthcare provider.  It was here that she learned the true meaning of perseverance.

While working for this employer, Jean suddenly started having seizures and became unable to work her normal 12 hour shifts.  Unfortunately, her employer was unwilling to help her find an alternative schedule and Jean was forced to quit her job.  She then landed a job with another company in the healthcare field, but after two years of employment the same situation occurred and she again was forced to quit.  Consequently, for three years, Jean remained unemployed because no one would give her a chance.  Thankfully, Jean’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Coordinator told her about Brevard Achievement Center’s (BAC) new BACk to Work program.

The BACk to Work program provides clients the chance to learn new job skills through internship at contracted employer sites.  Currently, DRS, Brevard County Government, Parrish Medical Center and Ron Jon Cape Caribe are participating in the program.  Jean landed at Ron Jon’s.

“All I needed was a chance and, unfortunately, employers weren’t willing to work with me,” Jean said.  “Thanks to the BACk to Work program, I’m finally moving forward again.”

During her internship at Ron Jon Cape Caribe, Jean has floated through several areas of the resort learning all about the hospitality industry.  So far she has worked the front desk, overseen pool activities and children’s arts and crafts.

“I really like working the front desk,” Jean said.  “That’s where I’d like to spend more time if I can because I love working with guests.”

As Jean has proved, it only takes one opportunity and a bit of perseverance to succeed.
