Brothers Charles and Carlos F. earned experience and a paycheck by working with the City of Palm Bay Parks and Recreation this summer.

The On-the-Job Training (OJT) program at Brevard Achievement Center (BAC) encourages the unison of employers and participants of the program who are willing to learn from each other. For the participant, OJT offers a paid opportunity to gain job skills. It also provides experience of what it’s like to work in a professional employment environment. For the employer, this program is an opportunity to be a mentor. Employers can educate someone who wants to work and learn new skills. They can also get an employee for an established period of time – all at no cost.

Summer Success

Each summer, BAC’s Employment Services (ES) department connects eager students with an employer seeking assistance and the willingness to teach. This past summer alone, more than a dozen local businesses partook in the OJT experience. Some employers even offered part-time opportunities to its participants.

One OJT client, Nicholas J., went above and beyond during his time at Sky Zone, scoring himself a job! “He got a customer compliment during his OJT,” shared BAC ES Administrator, Mariann Sampieri. “Since then, he was hired to work part-time and goes there everyday after school.” Makayla R. also received part-time employment after her OJT opportunity at the Brevard Zoo. Makayla currently works as a barista in their café.

With the experience and knowledge gained during this course of hands-on involvement, BAC clients are able to walk away with at least a gratified letter of recognition and professional experience on their resumes. Check out some of BAC’s OJT participants having fun on the job:
